Castle is a crime/drama television series that airs on ABC on Monday nights at 10:00 and is currently in its seventh season.
Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, is a writer who shadows Detective Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic, for inspiration on his next series of books. Both are the two main characters of the show. Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever play Detective Javier Esposito and Kevin Ryan, the two detectives who work with Beckett. Penny Johnson Jerald plays the captain of the police precinct, Captain Victoria Gates.
Castle is a crime/mystery writer. In his books, he just killed off his main character so he has to write a new book. He has extreme writer’s block so he needed something to spark his inspiration. He was arrested as he was a suspect for a murder because the murder resembled one that occurred in his book. He was questioned by Beckett and later released because they concluded he was innocent. Castle was in awe of Beckett’s work and thought it was great inspiration for his new book. He pulled some strings with his good friend, the mayor of NYC, to let him shadow Beckett and base his new book and main character off of her.
Castle follows a main plot of solving unusual murder cases throughout each episode. There are a few subplots throughout the series. One of these subplots is Castle and Beckett’s ongoing relationship issues. Castle was in love with Beckett and was chasing her for a while with no type of response back. After a few seasons Beckett came to her senses and starts to have feelings for Castle.
Another important subplot in the show is the case of Beckett’s mother’s death. Beckett’s mother was killed years ago and her case was neglected so she uses her knowledge, skills, and resources to revisit it to see if she can solve it. She starts out getting nowhere but ends up getting a few leads throughout the series which causes her a lot of problems and almost takes her life.
This show is a crime/drama series but it’s also a comedy. Although it is a show about a serious topic like murder, Fillion’s joking and unserious nature make the show lively. The story line is easy to follow as each episode has its own story but brings up information from past episodes. The makeup used on the dead bodies is realistic, and the creativity used in each crime scene is sublime.
The subplots are a great attribute to the show because you’re not only just watching for the crime solving, but you’re also wanting more as the episode usually ends as a cliff hanger.
Overall Castle is a great show that I would recommend watching.
